Dr Sun Yat-sen and the Development of Medical Science in Hong Kong

Participation Methods: Application closed
Participants will stroll around the Mid-levels via Castle Road, Caine Road, Ladder Street and Caine Lane, to the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences, where they will be guided through Dr Sun Yat-sen’s medical studies in Hong Kong and the city's development of medical science, followed by a hands-on workshop of making traditional mosquito-repellent sachets to deepen the understanding of healthcare during that era.

Participants will stroll along Caine Road, Castle Road, Shing Wong Street and Bridges Street in the Mid-Levels, arriving at the Hong Kong News-Expo (formerly the site of the Congregational Church). Museum staff will introduce Dr Sun Yat-sen’s baptism and the influence of the Christian faith on his revolutionary endeavours. Participants will then attend a thematic talk to further explore how the development of the newspaper in the late 19th century provided crucial support for the activities of the reformists and revolutionaries.

Participants will depart from the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum, proceed along Castle Road, Caine Road and Aberdeen Street, and arrive at PMQ — the former site of the second-generation campus of the Government Central School (now Queen’s College), Dr Sun Yat-sen’s alma mater. Workshop instructor will guide participants in cooking and tasting Dr Sun’s favourite Zhongshan tofu dish,‘Four-Substance Decoction with Tofu', as well as two other tofu preparations: 'Bittern Tofu' and 'Hakka Stuffed Tofu'. During the session, museum staff and the chef will share interesting anecdotes about Dr Sun and tofu in an informal chat.
